Life is sweet for growing Celebrations Bakery | Business
After purchasing Celebrations Bakery two years ago, owners Amber and Joe Owens are ready to expand their business. In a few weeks Celebrations will open a second location in the Spokane Valley to better serve their current and future customers.
The new store, located on the corner of 4th and Sullivan, is where Joe and Amber originally wanted to open a bakery three years ago. When leasing the space didn't work out they decided to purchase Celebrations in the Garland District.
“I had been baking out of my home for a long time,” said Amber. “By word of mouth alone I was busy.”
“We put it all on the line,” said Joe. The risk of purchasing Celebrations paid off, and the business has continued to grow and expand since they took over in 2011. Celebrations used to serve only cupcakes, but now offers cake pops, cookies and custom order cakes for all occasions.
“There's nothing that we don't do,” said Amber who has decorated cakes ranging from traditional wedding cakes, to seven tier superhero cakes and a zombie wedding cake. While a significant portion of their business still comes from cupcakes sold in their retail shop, Celebrations attributes longevity to the custom orders they are willing to take on.
“Cakes are where I love to be,” said Amber. She estimates that they've done over 100 weddings so far this year. Celebrations makes everything in the bakery from scratch, including the fondant used to create the smooth lines and decorations on ultra chic cakes. Amber said that the quality of the product and the level of customer service they provide has kept clients coming back time and again.
Expanding to the Spokane Valley is a natural next step for the Owens and Celebrations. The new store will bring Joe and Amber closer to their Spokane Valley home and allows them to be closer to what they say is a strong client base in the area.
“We want to get a foot in the door out here in the Valley,” said Joe. Celebrations often delivers cakes and cupcakes to Liberty Lake and North Idaho and having a Spokane Valley location will lower the delivery cost for those customers. The new location will also have extended hours, 8am to 6 pm, so that people that need to stop by before or after work can do so.
Amber recognizes that one day the cupcake craze will fade, but despite that Spokane can expect Celebrations to be around for a long time. Amber and Joe are willing to move and change however bakery trends dictate.
“People are always going to want something sweet whether it's cupcakes or not,” said Amber. Joe added that they're always looking for something fun and new to add to their bakery line up to shake things up. For now, cupcakes allow them to experiment with different flavors and styles on a daily basis.
“We're in it for keeps,” said Joe. “We want to keep Celebrations forever...or until we retire.”
While there is no set opening date for the Spokane Valley location, the store should be open by the beginning of November. Until then, you can visit the Garland District location to satisfy your cupcake cravings. You can keep up with the daily offerings and flavors by liking Celebrations on Facebook.
