Chivers donate to Cancer Care Northwest | Community Spirit
Fans of popular website The Chive are giving back in Spokane. The Inland Northwest Chapter of The Chive presented Cancer Care Northwest with a check for $1,400 on Thursday evening. Followers of the website held a fundraiser in October.
The Chive is a website that collects funny and viral photos and videos in one place. Since it launched in 2008, The Chive has gained a huge following with an average of 750,000 visitors a days. Fans of The Chive, or Chivers, have grown into a unique community that has started turning the humor website into an outlet for charity.
Local Chivers have started their own chapter, Inland Northwest Chive, and decided to put their gatherings to good use. On October 26th, the group held their first fundraising event at Whiskey Dick’s. INW Chive administrator Phillip Otterbein estimates that around 100 Chivers attended the event and silent auction.
“Everybody knows someone in their lives that has suffered from cancer,” said Otterbein, adding that the group chose to support Cancer Care Northwest because it impacts the lives of local families.
The local Chivers gave Cancer Care Northwest a check for $1,408 on Thursday night. Otterbein said that the group is busy planning other charity events and is looking to do volunteer work for December’s Chive get together.
